The Japan of Vies de college illuminates the issues of the novels Paschal Grousset wrote under the pseudonym Andre Laurie. As a mirror, model, and partner for France, Grousset's Japan reminds us that the series was based on the experience of the defeat of 1870-1, and the writer's conviction that he had to transmit the facts and the lessons they held for the future to the generations which had not lived through the annus horribilis.
