Substrate potential, plasma-polymerized hexamethyldisiloxane (PPHMDS) film adhesion strength, partial discharge characteristics, and lifespans of composite films exposed to partial discharges in a sphere-plane electrode system were investigated. Composite films were prepared in a triode glow discharge system by coating the surfaces of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films with PPHMDS films. The Gleitbuschel starting voltage, V-g, and the lifespan of composite films in partial discharge test electrode systems were higher than those of PTFE films. The increase of Vg and lifespans are attributed to the remarkable decrease in the surface resistivity of the films caused by the coating of PPHMDS. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
