摘要
Persons from a wide range of educational and practice backgrounds are involved in the construction industry in all counties. At the top of the hierarchy of qualifications and skills in the industry are persons who are widely recognised as 'professionals'. Whereas professionals are presumed to act in the interest of their clients, they belong to particular institutions to which they have a commitment. They are also supposed to have a responsibility to society. It is recognised that it is important for professionals to be effective in their roles. Thus, in many countries, efforts are being made to enhance 'professionalism'. However, the nature of construction activity and its products makes it essential for the professional to be effective. The meaning of 'professionalism' in the context of today's construction industry is explored. The need to enhance professionalism is discussed. It is argued that it is necessary to determine the real nature of professionalism in construction in order to do this. A research agenda is proposed.
