The scuffing behaviour of a Hertzian contact has been found to be strongly affected by the bonds of the lubricant molecules with the metal surface. The lubricant heat of adsorption is a key parameter that prescribes the strength of this physical bonding. Despite its importance, poor measurements are available and only for simple lubricants. In this paper, an experimental method is presented that permits the determination of the heat of adsorption for additive-free mineral oils. It is based on friction coefficient measurements, conducted on a two-disk test rig. The method is initially verified by measuring the heat of adsorption of a simple fluid (n-hexadecane) and then it is used to determine the heat of adsorption of FVA#2 (ISO VG32) mineral oil. Results are presented and discussed.
