Economic globalization leads to higher demands for the talent cultivation of the speciality of international trade at Vocational Institutes of Higher Learning (VIHL). If the speciality intends to be the winner in the fierce competition of talent cultivation, core competence is an unavoidable topic. Core competence is the foundation for the speciality of international trade at VIHL, gaining long-standing, stable competitive advantage and also the power source for its sustainable development. The paper first analyzes the formation elements and then explores the ways to build core competence of the speciality of international trade at VIHL. Economic globalization results in much closer economic ties and more frequent trade contacts between China and other countries, which leads to higher requirements of import & export-oriented enterprises in China for talents involved in international trade activities. The speciality of international trade at Vocational Institutes of Higher Learning (VIHL), supplying a large number of high-skilled talents to the frontline posts of import & export-oriented enterprises, is in urgent need of thinking over how to improve with the times and cultivate high quality skilled foreign trade talents. Under the background of economic globalization, the most effective and also the most critical point is to enhance core competencies if the speciality of international trade at VIHL wants to remain invincible in the competition of talent cultivation. Hence, building core competencies becomes an unavoidable topic facing the speciality of international trade at VIHL.
