The Reception of the Arabic Documentation on the Cartularies of the Chapter of Toledo's Archive: Translations and Adaptations of Arabic Documents between Latin and Romance

The aim of this paper is to study the ways in which the Arabic records issued by in the Mozarabic notaries of Toledo were included in two cartularies produced in the cathedral scriptorium: Toledo, Biblioteca Capitular, 42-20 (1190) and Madrid, Archivo Historico Nacional, 987B (1257 p. q.). These volumes show similarities in the mechanisms for the inclusion of Arabic charts, since they are not copied literally, but translated and summarised. However, the cartularies also present important differences: while Toledo, Biblioteca Capitular, 42-20 copies some Arabic signatures, in Madrid, Archivo Historico Nacional, 987B Arabic is completely absent. Moreover, the volumes also differ in the placement of the Arabic summaries in the set of copied documents and, above all, in the target language of their translations: Latin for the former, Romance in the second one. Thus, the analysis of the mechanisms of reception of Arabic in these two cartularies provides us with information about the coexistence of languages in medieval Toledo as well as information about the changes in the linguistic landscape in the period between the production of the two cartularies.
