Baroja, La familia de Errotacho and the Vera de Bidasoa Events of 1924

In 1924 a revolutionary uprising took place in Vera de Bidasoa and its outskirsts, in the hands of a group of Spanish anarchists and refugees who crossed the French border. The second part of Pio Baroja's La familia de Errotacho (1932) narrates these events in a non fiction novel avant la lettre. A close reading of some formal aspects of the text and a comparison between the story and historical facts triggers a reflection on the problematic nature of this hybrid genre, the author's personal and ideological motivations and the reception of the novel in the context of the Spanish Republic.
