Sustainability and the politics of the body in alternative food consumption: An embodied materialist perspective

Health is a key dimension of contemporary food consumption. This preoccupation is beginning to overlap with ecological concerns, as healthy diets are said to largely correspond with sustainable diets. Nevertheless, this link remains rather vague and under-researched in practice. This article adopts an 'embodied materialist' perspective to inquire into how the health-sustainability nexus is articulated in the everyday labour of people engaging in alternative food consumption. The interviews, carried out in Milan (Italy), suggest that focusing on health might not always be straightforwardly effective for the promotion of deep and systemic changes. The analysis finds three ways in which the health-sustainability nexus is articulated in daily life. If framed within the dominant articulation of labour and value, health is an individualistic preoccupation with limited potential for socio-ecological transformation. When food labour is guided by the very different logic of care, which emphasises relationality, fragility and the search for a shared wellbeing, more ecological practices emerge, but with some ambivalent implications especially with regards to social justice. Collective engagement in alternative food networks politicises the body more deeply, making it a concrete site of struggle against unsustainable food regimes. La sante est une dimension essentielle de la consommation alimentaire contemporaine. Cette preoccupation commence a recouper les preoccupations ecologiques, dans la mesure ou les regimes alimentaires sains sont censes dans une large mesure correspondre a des regimes alimentaires durables. Neanmoins, ce lien reste assez vague et peu etudie dans la pratique. Cet article adopte une perspective de << materialisme incarne >> pour etudier la maniere dont le lien entre sante et durabilite s'articule dans le travail quotidien des personnes qui s'engagent dans une consommation alimentaire alternative. Les entretiens, menes a Milan (Italie), semblent indiquer que le fait de se centrer sur la sante n'est pas toujours un moyen direct et efficace de promouvoir des changements profonds et systemiques. L'analyse montre que le lien entre sante et durabilite s'articule de trois manieres differentes dans la vie quotidienne. Concue dans le cadre du lien dominant entre travail et valeur, la sante est une preoccupation individualiste au potentiel de transformation socio-ecologique limite. Lorsque le travail alimentaire est guide par la logique tres differente du care (l'attention a la personne), qui met l'accent sur la relationnalite, la fragilite et la recherche d'un bien-etre partage, des pratiques plus ecologiques se font jour, mais avec des implications ambivalentes, en particulier en ce qui concerne la justice sociale. L'engagement collectif dans des reseaux alimentaires alternatifs politise le corps plus profondement, en le convertissant en site concret de lutte contre les regimes alimentaires non durables. La salud es una dimension clave en el consumo contemporaneo de alimentos. Esta preocupacion esta empezando a superponerse a las preocupaciones ecologicas, ya que se dice que las dietas saludables se corresponden en gran medida con las dietas sostenibles. Sin embargo, este vinculo sigue siendo bastante vago y poco investigado en la practica. Este articulo adopta una perspectiva de 'materialismo encarnado' para investigar como se articula el nexo salud-sostenibilidad en el trabajo diario de las personas que participan en el consumo de alimentos alternativos. Las entrevistas, realizadas en Milan (Italia), sugieren que centrarse en la salud puede que no sea siempre eficaz de manera directa para promover cambios profundos y sistemicos. El analisis encuentra tres formas en las que el nexo salud-sostenibilidad se articula en la vida diaria. Si se enmarca dentro de la articulacion dominante de trabajo y valour, la salud es una preocupacion individualista con un potencial limitado para la transformacion socioecologica. Cuando el trabajo alimentario se guia por la muy diferente logica del cuidado, que enfatiza la relacionalidad, la fragilidad y la busqueda de un bienestar compartido, surgen practicas mas ecologicas, pero con algunas implicaciones ambivalentes, especialmente en lo que respecta a la justicia social. La participacion colectiva en redes alimentarias alternativas politiza el cuerpo mas profundamente, convirtiendolo en un lugar concreto de lucha contra regimenes alimentarios insostenibles.
