Nitrogen and Phosphorus Allocation Strategies in a Chronosequence of Tropical Dry Forests: Plant Coordination and Environmental Drivers

Identifying how limited resources, such as nutrients, are allocated across plant organs can provide new insights into ecophysiological strategies, as well as ecosystem nutrient cycles. Plants may allocate different nutrients within a specific organ or the same nutrient among different organs. In this study, we explored the allocation strategies of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the leaves, stems, and roots of nine dominant tree species in secondary tropical dry forests using scaling analysis. The results showing that N and P have different scaling relationships within and among plant organs. The scaling relationships of P versus N concentrations in non-leaf organs were isometric across secondary succession and shifted in leaves from allometric (P concentration increased faster than N concentration) to isometric. The scaling relationships of N or P concentrations between metabolic (leaves vs. fine roots) or between structural (stems vs. coarse roots) plant organs tended to be isometric along succession. Whilst the scaling relationships of the same nutrient between metabolic versus structural plant organs tended to be allometric (N and P concentrations increased faster in woody organs than in metabolic organs) across succession. A principal component analysis suggests associations of nutrient allocation to woody organs with soil pH over the chronosequence and with vegetation structure and soil nutrient availability in the case of metabolic organs. These findings on the sensitivity in plant nutrient allocation to changes in soil and vegetation properties during secondary succession may have practical implications for carbon sequestration management and models and restoration of this threatened ecosystem. Identificar c & oacute;mo se asignan recursos limitados, como los nutrientes, entre los & oacute;rganos de las plantas puede proporcionar nuevos conocimientos respecto a las estrategias ecofisiol & oacute;gicas, as & iacute; como a los ciclos de nutrientes de los ecosistemas. Las plantas pueden asignar diferentes nutrientes dentro de un & oacute;rgano espec & iacute;fico o el mismo nutriente entre diferentes & oacute;rganos. En este estudio, exploramos las estrategias de asignaci & oacute;n de nitr & oacute;geno (N) y f & oacute;sforo (P) en hojas, tallos y ra & iacute;ces de nueve especies de & aacute;rboles dominantes en bosques tropicales secundarios secos mediante el an & aacute;lisis del escalamiento. Los resultados muestran que el N y el P tienen diferentes relaciones de escala dentro y entre los & oacute;rganos de la planta. Las relaciones de escala de las concentraciones de P vs. N en & oacute;rganos fuera de las hojas fueron isom & eacute;tricas a lo largo de la sucesi & oacute;n secundaria y cambiaron en las hojas de alom & eacute;tricas (la concentraci & oacute;n de P aument & oacute; m & aacute;s r & aacute;pido que la concentraci & oacute;n de N) a isom & eacute;tricas. Mientras que las relaciones de escala de un mismo nutriente entre los & oacute;rganos metab & oacute;licos y estructurales de la planta fueron alom & eacute;tricas (las concentraciones de N y P aumentaron m & aacute;s r & aacute;pido en los & oacute;rganos le & ntilde;osos que en los & oacute;rganos metab & oacute;licos) durante la sucesi & oacute;n. Un an & aacute;lisis de componentes principales sugiere asociaciones de la asignaci & oacute;n de nutrientes a los & oacute;rganos le & ntilde;osos con el pH del suelo a lo largo de la cronosecuencia, y con la estructura de la vegetaci & oacute;n y la disponibilidad de nutrientes del suelo en el caso de los & oacute;rganos metab & oacute;licos. Estos hallazgos sobre la sensibilidad de la asignaci & oacute;n y coordinaci & oacute;n de nutrientes en las plantas a los cambios en las propiedades del suelo y la vegetaci & oacute;n durante la sucesi & oacute;n secundaria pueden tener implicaciones pr & aacute;cticas para la gesti & oacute;n y los modelos de secuestro de carbono, y la restauraci & oacute;n de este amenazado ecosistema.
