The progressive steps involved in redesigning and marketing a small portable air compressor are traced. A prime innovation in the new product was the incorporation of a novel piston, which was a three-fourths sphere instead of cylindrical. The spherical shape and the teflon bronze material used for the piston ensured minimal wear and friction between piston and cylinder walls. Designed for the recreational field to inflate toys, balloons and swimming pools, marketing was carried out through trade exhibitions and participation in trade associations.
