The article outlines the present state and future prospects of the Irish gas industry. It concentrates on the Cork-Dublin pipeline which has been designed to provide the backbone of a national gas distribution system, making gas available to the towns along its route and further afield. Substantial progress has been made in its efforts to reflect, in a balanced way, the needs of individuals and corporate bodies, both in the Republic and Northern Ireland.
