This report describes the Oxitron system, a fluidized-bed biological wastewater treatment process which combines activated-sludge and trickling-filter methods. It can be used in secondary treatment for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal or in tertiary treatment processes such as nitrification of ammonia or dentrification of nitrates. The system requires less land area and contact time than other biological treatments because higher volumetric loading rates are possible. Biological organisms are fixed in the system - as in a trickling filter - and are claimed capable of providing greater process stability in handling shock and toxic loads. Design and operational details of the system are given.
