Automatic flight control systems in the civil and military operational environments have evolved from limited authority autostabilization and auto-pilot systems. Only in recent times do we see the emergence of full authority fly-by-wire control systems without mechanical reversion. The reasons for going to this level of technology are many, and whilst it is not the purpose of this paper to examine them in detail, it is worthwhile summarizing some of the driving reasons.
