Simultaneous heat and mass transfer in binary distillation was investigated experimentally by distilling methanol-water and ethanol-water systems under total reflux in a small, vertical, flat-plate, wetted-wall column. The effects of the interfacial velocity due to mass transfer of high- and low-boiling components on the heat and mass transfer rates were studied, and the transfer resistances in the vapor and liquid phases were assessed on the basis of the observed vapor-phase temperature distribution. The vapor-phase transfer resistance was found to be controlling.
