In an effort to assist spring design engineers to product cost effective, quality springs that are safely stressed, Wisconsin Coil Spring, Inc. has developed a means of quickly checking the helix angle of a spring design against what could be considered an ideal helix angle. This helix angle ratio or Xq, as it is referred to in this article, is based on the formula . 41nD plus 1 one-half d, where 'n' is the number of active coils, 'd' is the wire size, and 'D' is the mean diameter of the spring.
