EXAMPLES OF THE INTERNAL CONDITIONS OF SOME OLD EARTH DAMS.

The investigation of several old dams, dating back as far as 1794, provides the background to the discussion of the condition of several earth embankments. The lack of drawings and knowledge of the soil properties has often led to a borehole investigation into old dams, with special attention to drainage conditions. Some examples of recent investigations are discussed. Failures of dams, and the statutory inspection of reservoirs are also dealt with.
