For crystals with covalent bonding, the longitudinal function of electron reaction to variations in charge density in the ionic framework can be expressed, in the shortwave approximation, through the magnitude of the 'bonding charges'. It is shown that this reaction function can be expressed in terms of the shear moduli of the crystals.
