The theory of homogeneous nucleation during bulk melting of metals is developed. An expression is obtained for the attainable overheating above the melting point, DELTA T equals T minus T//m( DELTA T equals 100-200 degree in typical metals). Similar values of DELTA T are registered during rapid Joule heating of copper specimens. The nucleation rate of the liquid phase is governed by the microscopic melting kinetics. Elastic forces have practically no influence on nucleation dynamics. The results are applicable to other materials with low specific heat of melting.
