Deep anode groundbed systems can be the best choice by the corrosion engineer to protect long stretches of pipeline in congested areas and where surface moisture conditions or resistivity dictate deep anode placement. Because a large amount of dc current can be produced in a small area, the systems are very useful in built-up areas. When designing deep anode beds, several critical points must be determined and evaluated: current output; life of system; final groundbed resistance; soil resistance; hole diameter; material selection; and cost.
