摘要
The article illustrates the impressions reported during a visit to Mexico City only ten days after the catastrophic seismic event. The characteristics of the earthquake are briefly described as well as the local amplifications in downtown Mexico City, which is surprisingly sited at about 400 km from the earthquake epicentre. The geotechnical reasons for this phenomenon are examined. Furthermore, damage to buildings, resulted to be extremely selective relative to certain limited dynamic characteristics.
