Utilizing the regularities of wear of a worm gear pair, an equation is presented for the equilibrium of forces distributed along the contact line in the form of a functional. The functional extremum, corresponding to the minimum of the integral wear rate of the worm gear pair, corresponds to a certain shape of the instantaneous contact lines, which can be obtained in a practical way with the aid of a correction during gear cutting.
