For any company lacking experience in planning (and this is the usual situation), there are good reasons for using one or other of the '%'package'%computerized systems of production planning. Sophistication in computerized planning, where it is successful, achieves, on the one hand, remarkable effectiveness and economy in the use of resources. On the other hand it requires from the designers a rare combination of skills.
