The vast Regional Express Railway (RER) network was planned in the 1930's in the Ile-de-France region and has gradually taken shape since the 1960's. Over all those years RER has been meeting the ever growing transportation needs of the population of the Ile-de-France region. The article reviews the history of the Regional Express Railway from August 1, 1964, when the first RER line was created to the recent commissioning of the Stade de France - Saint-Denis station.
