A new method of determining gravity segregation in Al-Si die casting alloys was employed. It consists in continuous determination of the decrease in Fe, Mn, and Cr contents of specimens taken from the surface of melts held at 720 to 590 C. The results show that at certain Si and Cu contents, under equilibrium conditions, there are minimum holding temperatures at which Fe, Mn, and Cr segregation stops. Other effects such as those of common impurities and melt treatment are also discussed.
