Most distillation columns in the chemical processing industry are operated with strategies devised to control the composition of a single product. Recent advances in on-stream process analyzers notwithstanding, the composition signals for feedback are usually derived from temperature measurements on a specified control tray somewhere in the unit. Much work has been done to define procedure for determining the control tray locations which minimize the steady state offset of the primary product composition under various load disturbances. A method has been developed for control plate location which satisfies broader performance criteria, accounting for recovery effects and column dynamics as well as steady state product composition.
