Synthesis and determination of the composition of polysulfones by infrared spectroscopy

In this study, we propose an infrared spectrometry technique to determine the copolymer composition. Polysulfones are copolymerized by acrylamide and sulfur dioxide at various conditions. The copolymer's composition is measured as a function of the ratio of the absorbance of the CH2 group (1423 cm-1) to the absorbance of the SO2 group (1305 cm-1). Using this linear relation, the copolymer composition can be easily determined without repeating the experiment of an element analysis in the range of 2.83-11.96. Experimental results confirm that this technique applied to poly(styrene sulfone) is valid for the copolymer in the range of 1.27-5.25. The data and the linear relationship correlate well with each other.
