A mathematical model is proposed to evaluate the effect of the electromagnetic force field, the velocity field and the temperature field in a gas metal arc (GMA) weld pool. The unsteady-state model considers not only the interaction of electromagnetic, buoyant and surface tension forces, but also the energy exchange between the weld pool and the molten filler metal droplets via spray transfer. The vorticity stream function and implicit finite difference method are employed to approach the solution. The model can be applied to analyze the fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena in both the GMA and gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding processes. Occurrences of finger penetration phenomena in the GMA weld are adequately explained through the application of the proposed model. It is found that the frequency of spray transfer is a dominant factor, besides the Lorentz force, in shaping the weld pool geometry.
