The historical and social context of the course is covered, as well as other courses in control available to the students. The following premises formed the basis for this core course: (a) what should every chemical engineer know about control? (b) what they learn should make a difference where they work, (c) conventional and computer control should be integrated. This was expanded into a set of detailed objectives; these plus their implementation in lectures and other modes of learning are described in detail.
