Glass is the single most important component material in the production of picture tubes. The color picture tube is a glass envelope, comprising a face plate (panel) and a funnel. The panel and funnel are bonded together with a low temperature solder glass frit. The electron gun components are aligned and held in place by glass bars. External electrical contract to the electron gun in the evacuated tube is made by lead wires, which are part of a glass-to-metal seal. The requirements placed on glass as a CRT fabrication material in terms of design and manufacturing have never been greater than they are in the 1980s.
