Out-of-plane strengthening scheme for reinforced masonry walls

Retrofitting scheme merits simplicity and superior esthetics and it significantly enhances the out-of-plane flexural capacity. The moment capacity of the retrofitted scheme was ten times greater than that of the specimens without the retrofit. In a study, Specimens W3, W4, and W5 demonstrated ductile behavior throughout the range of the applied load; brittle modes such as shear failure of the masonry wall or brittle failure of the masonry in compression did not take place. Flexural strength of the retrofitted section predicted by the ultimate strength design approach is in good agreement with the tested values.
