This review describes recent (post-1981) studies in ion implantation into metals and alloys. Areas discussed include structure; hardness, wear, and friction; fatigue; oxidation; and corrosion. Results of the wear of implanted cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide components are summarized. The review of ion implanted ceramics focuses on structure and surface mechanical properties.
