Tensile tests were carried out using Fe-42%Ni steel, unalloyed Ti, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and an Al alloy (A5083-O). The serration of the Al alloy was not observed until plastic deformation proceeded to a considerable extent, while that of the other materials was observed early in the plastic deformation. This difference is mainly caused by the low strength level of the Al alloy because thermal conductivity of the unalloyed Ti is larger than that of the Al alloy. Large thermal conductivity produces small serrations.
