T he initial part of this work was a project funded through the Arctic EnvironmentStrategySnowSurvey Program while the author was a hydrologist with the Water Resources Division; Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. The computer equipment for the data analysis and development of algorithms was purchased through a start-up grant provided by the University of Alberta. Logistic support for the 1993 and 1994 snow surveys near Resolute Bay was provided by the Polar Continental Shelf Project; Energy; Mines and Resources Canada. Bob Reid of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in Yellowknife and Sheldon Lovell of the University of Alberta were part of the survey team in 1993 and 1994; respectively. The review comments of two reviewers also helped in the revision of this paper;
