Light Deflection and Modulation by Opto-Acoustic Effect.

Diffraction of light by ultrasonic waves permits realization of high speed light modulators and deflectors. The maximum angle delta THETA of deflection is proportional to the index of refraction n of the material and inversely proportional to the width W of the ultrasonic beam and to the ultrasonic frequency F: delta THETA equals 2 nV/FW. High efficiencies up to 95% canbe achieved with driving power less than one watt. An experiment of TV projection shows that the systems are very fast and have numerous applications.
