Summary form only given. To prevent increases in the coercivity (H//c ) and reductions of recording/reproduction sensitivity when the permalloy underlayer of double-layer perpendicular recording media is made thicker than about 2000 angstrom, the authors tried fabricating multilayer permalloy layers. It was found that by forming a thin Ti layer between two permalloy layers, a thick underlayer film with low H//c could be obtained. Such an underlayer film also resulted in a better c-axis orientation in the Co-Cr layer formed on top than when a single permalloy layer was used.
