The feasibility of a cogeneration plant hinges on the balance of steam and power obtained for a particular application, the terms of purchase and sale of power to the local utility, and the investment required. A comparative design analysis was developed for the uprating and refurbishing of an industrial co-generation facility. The plant requirements were specified as 245,000 pounds per hour of process steam at 135 spig, and 83 megawatts of electrical power. The existing power generation system included four gas turbine driven generators with waste heat boilers, and steam plant consisting of 7 fired boilers. The generators were radially connected to a 40 mw 2400 v substation. Two generators were connected to each of two buses, which in turn supplied power to the chemical plant and power house through a radial distribution system.
