Etherification of 2-methylpropene, 2-methyl-1-butene and 2-methyl-2-butene with alcohols

The etherification of isobutene, 2-methyl-1-butene and 2-methyl-2-butene (isoamylenes) with various alcohols was studied using a strong cation exchange resin as catalyst. Main emphasis was on the determination of the reaction equilibria and on kinetic modeling. The effect of water on the etherification and isomerization of isoamylenes was studied in addition to the dehydration of ethanol to diethylether and water. The addition of small amount of water caused a marked drop in the isoamylene conversion and in the etherification rate compared to pure ethanol.
