The authors examine the extent to which an orifice surge tank protects the pressure tunnel for a hydro plant from water-hammer waves (or, conversely, the limit of throttling under given turbine conditions to allow only permissible water-hammer pressures in the low-pressure tunnel). The experimental set-up and procedure adopted to establish families of curves and a general equation which can be used to facilitate optimum design of an orifice surge tank are described.
