A study was made of laser thermal and laser thermochemical machining of corrosion-resistant steels of ferritic, martensitic-ferritic and martensitic grades. The ranges of formation of melting zones in carbon steels during radiation of the radiation energy and the thickness of the saturating lubricant were investigated. A study was made of the microplasticity, the corrosion resistance, the heat resistance, and the variation of the hardness profile as a function of the laser machining regimes employed. A real possibility of hardening corrosion-resistant chromium steels by both laser thermal and laser thermochemical machining is demonstrated.
