Heat-recovery boiler designs can take various forms such as fire-tube, water-tube, and combination types. In each case, a wide variety of tube sizes and fin configurations are possible. Boiler performance has to be evaluated considering all of the possible operating modes, and with regard to steaming, gas velocity, metal temperatures, heat flux, corrosion, erosion, tube-bundle vibration, and noise. These parameters are discussed for recovery boilers used on gas turbine exhaust streams and for applications involving process plant waste heat sources. A simplified method for predicting performance is given with an example of its use.
