Nondestructive Thickness Measurements on Antifriction Bearing Races.

Methods for calibrating beta radiation back reflection instruments, and results of investigations of the effects of Sekowski parameters on measurements with such instruments when used on composite bearing races are described. The races are built up, for instance, of a 10mm protective steel layer, a 15mm lead bronze layer, a 0. 001 to 0. 005mm nickel layer, and a ternary alloy (Sn-Cu-Pb) layer 0. 02 to 0. 0025mm thick. The last two are applied by electrodeposition, and their thickness affects bearing performance.
