When it goes into action in September, the massive twin-chamber pumping station of Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) mainstream wastewater collection system will have a maximum capacity of 710 mgd. Constructed 350 ft below ground level, the pumping station is one of the largest underground facilities of its kind ever built in rock caverns. Testing and fine tuning of the installation began recently and will last 6 months. The pumping station is a key element of TARP, which is a project being carried out by the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago.
