In Australia, as in many other countries, planning for the evolution of the telecommunications network towards an integrated services digital network (ISDN) has started. This paper provides an overview of the ISDN concept, the status of international standardisation, the reasons for moving towards ISDN, and the means by which its introduction will be achieved.
