COMPUTER-AIDED NOISE DIAGNOSTICS THROUGH SYNCHRONOUS SOUND ANALYSIS.

This article describes a method to emulate the human ear in the detection of unusual sound emanating from a mechanical device at periodic intervals. The sounds emanating from a mechanical device can tell a great deal about the condition of the device. Normally it takes a 'trained ear' to detect many abnormalities but with the techniques described it is possible to replace the 'trained ear' with a machine providing objectivity and repeatability to the measurement. The technique involves multiple measurements of sound at precise time intervals which are synchronized with a particular machine cycle.
