Considerations for WSR-88D upgrades to improve rainfall measurements

The National Severe Storms Laboratory is currently upgrades to the WSR-88D (NEXRAD) radar to improve rainfall measurements. An engineering evaluation is carried out to determine if the WSR-88D antenna assembly with minimum modification could be used in a polarimetric mode. Experiments with the CSU-CHILL radar are performed to compare polarimetric transmissions of H, V waves. Overall, measurements and theory indicate that simultaneous transmission and reception of H, V waves should produce at least as good or, perhaps, better results than the STAR or HV modes.
