The suitability of various, mostly magmatic, rocks for mineral fibre production was examined. Pulverized samples of rock of the same fraction were melted for 30 min in alumina crucibles at temperatures between 1250 and 1500 degree C. Three diabases were investigated further. Relatively small differences in mineral composition and texture influence the melting behaviour of the rocks significantly. A short test melt is a rapid way of obtaining valuable information about the suitability of other rocks. In melts which show a marked tendency to segregation and crystallization, the beginning of crystallization can be detected more precisely from viscosity measurements than by DTA.
