Bridge lighting brightens Miami skyline

A special architectural lighting scheme was developed and implemented by Beiwenger, Hoch and Associates for the Port of Miami/Dodge Island Bridge using metal halide lamps to accentuate the city's downtown skyline. The metal halide lamps were recommended after considering their efficiency, their ability to render precise colors and perform under harsh and corrosive marine environment. To complement the metal halide lamps and floodlight fixtures, bilevel lighting controls were specified which featured a solid state relay to detect and respond to changing conditions. The bridge has received two prestigious awards: the Outstanding Concrete Structures Excellence in Concrete Award, and the Federal Highway Administration's Award of Excellence.
