Hydrodynamic processes taking place in the clearnace between two mutually moving surfaces are investigated by the classic hydrodynamic theory of the lubricating film, elastohydrodynamic effects being neglected. Fundamental relations are derived, and the influence of the formation of vacuum as well as the increase in ambient pressure upon the hydrodynamic load capacity is examined. It is shown that the load capacity in some cases, particularly in circular arc clearances are strongly influenced by the ambient pressure. This phenomenon is of importance in journal bearings and slideways operating at high ambient pressure as well as in seals of h-p hydraulic pumps and motors.
