This paper is concerned with the building and safety codes which are not the arbitrary obstacles to progress that they sometimes appear to be, they are an excellent reference source and, ″provide minimum standards to safeguard life or limb, health, property, and public welfare by regulating and controlling design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, location and maintenance of all buildings, structures and certain equipment.″ Several major building codes are used throughout the U. S. , and include the ″Uniform Building Code″ the ″Standard Building Code″ and the ″BOCA Basic Building Code″ . The cited codes include regulations dealing with structural design, as well as many other critical aspects for the construction of chemical process plants. Other codes have been written on fire prevention, electrical distribution, plumbing and other vital components of construction. Some details of requirements imposed by the building codes are given.
