Among organic compounds the solubility in water of which has remained unknown up to the present time, one of the main positions is occupied by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the majority of which possess carcinogenic activity and are present in very different concentrations in solid and liquid fuels and in the products of their thermal processing. In this paper, information is given on the solubility of a number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fresh and salt water. Hildebrand's solubility parameters have been calculated for the PAHs investigated and the changes in some of the thermodynamic parameters ( DELTA G, DELTA H, and DELTA s) in the dissolution of the PAHs in water have been evaluated. Experimental and calculated data are tabulated. It has been shown that the salt composition of the water has no appreciable influence on the value of the true solubility.
